Lot Essay

The crew took this photograph of Earth through the 250mm telephoto lens before their first night of sleep inside the Command spacecraft Columbia. The west coast of the United States is near the terminator on the upper right. The Pacific Ocean dominates the view with Australia on the lower left.

From the mission transcript during the outbound journey to the Moon:

010:39:36 Aldrin: Okay, Houston. You suppose you could turn the Earth a little bit so we could get a little bit more than just water?
010:39:45 Duke (Mission Control): Roger, 11. I don’t think we got much control over that. Looks like you’ll have to settle for the water. [...]
012:54:00 Public Affairs Officer (Mission Control): This is Apollo Control. We don’t anticipate a great deal of further conversation with the crew. We expect they will attempt to get some sleep shortly. [...] At this time, Apollo 11 is 61,509 nautical miles [113,915 km] from Earth, traveling at a speed of 7,449 feet per second [2,270 m/s] which would translate to about 5,000 miles an hour [8,000 km/h]. At 12 hours, 54 minutes; this is Apollo Control, Houston.
