Armstrong took this photograph of Aldrin as he had just put the LRRR (Laser Ranging Retro reflector) down on the surface and turned to his left to find a spot for the seismometer. He set up the LRRR about 14 m south-southwest of the LM and the seismometer a bit farther out from the LM (19 m). The last experiment, the Lunar Dust Detector, was mounted on the Passive Seismic Experiment.

110:59:03 Aldrin: Okay; how about I put the LR-cubed right about here?
110:59:07 Armstrong: All right. (Pause) Right about...
110:59:12 Aldrin: I’m going to have to get on the other side of this rock here. (Pause)
110:59:19 Armstrong: I would go right around that crater to the left there. Isn’t that a level spot there?
110:59:25 Aldrin: I think this right here is just as level.
110:59:28 Armstrong: Okay.

“Compared with later missions, the suite of scientific gear that Armstrong and Aldrin deployed was quite modest. Weight limitations were certainly one reason why Apollo 11 flew with only a few pieces of scientific gear. Another was the simple fact that, on this first landing, it was unlikely that NASA management would have approved an EVA long enough to allow the astronauts to deploy a complete Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) used on later missions” (from the ALSJ mission summary).
