David Scott at his Commander seat of the Lunar Rover; Scott driving the Rover; the Swann Range behind the Rover antenna, July 26-August 7, 1971, EVA 2
515 a The photograph was taken near the LM at the beginning of the second EVA as Scoot was testing the Lunar Rover before the drive to station 6. The lunar-science station is visible behind the Rover with Hill 305 in the background. The electric car enabled Scott and Irwin to cover a greater distance and collect a greater variety of geological samples than accomplished on the three previous lunar landings combined. The lunar orbital photographs in front of Scott were used as an aid for navigation as the crew spent almost 38 man-hours on their three expeditions.
143:03:46 Irwin: I’d like to just walk a little bit. Not going to go too far? 143:03:50 Scott: Nope. 143:03:51 Irwin: Don’t run off and leave me. 143:03:52 Scott: Never happen.
515 b “Irwin took this excellent picture of Scott maneuvering the Rover at the start of the EVA-2 traverse. The Solar Wind Collector is visible beyond the Rover TV camera. At the front of the Rover, we can see the closed battery covers. In front of Irwin’s seat, we can see his footrests. Note that there is dust coming off the wheels as Scott maneuvers. This picture also gives us a good view of Scott’s RCU-mounted Hasselblad camera and of the wire Rover wheels. The traverse maps are mounted on Irwin’s handhold” (ALSJ caption for AS15-85-11471).
515 c A frame of a partial panorama taken during the outbound drive to Station 6 as “Scott stopped for a brief rest and suggested that Irwin take his camera off his chest and take a partial panorama. During Apollo 16, John Young and Charlie Duke realized that they could do a full panorama by turning the Rover in a tight circle while taking pictures; and they and the Apollo 17 crew used the technique to good effect” (ALSJ caption for AS15-85-11472).
143:38:21 Scott: (To Allen at Mission Control) I just wanted to take a little break for a minute. Jim, why don’t you pull your camera off and swing it around and get a pan? Let me hold the maps for you. (Long Pause) I’ll bet you can get, you know, almost 90 or 100 degrees of pan there.
