Shepard took this shot from near the MET, looking southeast along the geophone line after its deployment at the lunar-science station.
Standing to the other side of the geophone line, Mitchell is working his way back, stopping every 15 feet to operate a device called a thumper to generate data about the internal structure of the Moon.

“The dark feature on the horizon is a large crater 1 km across called Old Nameless which is actually over 2 km away” (Constantine, p.53).

These adjoining photographs show several components of the ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Scientific Equipment Package). The larger object with the antenna is the ALSEP central station. The Active Seismic Experiment mortar assembly, the Charged Particle Lunar Environmental Experiment, the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG), the Modular Equipment Transporter (foreground) are also visible.

“The ALSEP central station transmits data collected from the instrument packages to receivers on Earth. The highly directional antenna visible at the upper right must be precisely oriented toward Earth during deployment” (NASA SP-272, p.21).

The Central station was outfitted with Gold Mylar insulation. Mounting hardware for the various
experiment packages with the various electrical connection are visible. The mortar pack is to the right of the first photograph.

Shepard took this superb photograph to document the location of the comprehensive sample collected on the way back to the LM after the ALSEP deployment. It is a “locator” to the lunar science station (or ALSEP site).

I’ve not found an area exactly what I want, so I have drawn a circle which is approximately 2 m in radius, and I’m going to pick the surface rocks from that, and a sampling of the surface fines from that area.
