Lot Essay

A frame from the last panoramic sequence ever captured by astronauts while on the lunar surface.

Cernan is carrying back to the Rover “a double core sample of some unusually light-gray material Schmitt discovered when he dug a trench. The crew deemed sampling the material so important that they requested an extension at station 9 which was eventually granted by Mission Control at the expense of cancelling station 10” (Constantine, p.143).

168:40:28 Cernan: (The core tube is) full, but it wants to slide out. It’s full. No rocks in it. It looks like just the same stuff we’ve been traveling through.
168:40:40 Parker (Mission Control): Okay, Jack. I think you better help Gene with recovering that core there where he thinks it’s going to fall out.
168:40:48 Schmitt: You know, I think you’re right. And if you’ll just wait until I finish the pan, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
168:40:54 Parker: Okay. I didn’t know what you were

Cernan went to the front of the Rover to take pictures of Schmitt jumping in his LMP (Lunar Module Pilot) seat.
The East Massif is in the background.

“It was sort of a target of opportunity (photograph). It was just one of those (unplanned) things you do. And it’s a pretty good picture,” noted Eugene Cernan (from the ALSJ transcript at 168:47:03 GET)

168:46:44 Cernan: Okay, Jack, (pause) we better get going.
168:46:50 Schmitt: Yeah. (Pause) You know, I don’t think there is any subfloor in here. The rocks are so dust covered that it’s hard to be sure, but no rock I picked up looked like subfloor.
168:47:03 Cernan: Get on there (on the Rover) one time. (Pause)
168:47:08 Schmitt: Ready? (Pause)
168:47:12 Cernan: I got three of them (photos) that time.
