Lot Essay

The crew took the photograph with the 250mm telephoto lens after transEarth injection following
the 64th revolution of the spacecraft around the Moon.

“This Hasselblad EL photograph was exposed after the TEC (TransEarth Coast) trajectory had carried the CSM high above a point near the lunar equator at approximately 55° E longitude. Near-full- Moon illumination accentuates the difference in albedo and permits detailed examination of the extensive ray patterns associated with craters that are near or beyond the eastern limb when the Moon is viewed from the Earth” (NASA SP-315, p. 4.32).

From the mission transcript after trans Earth injection:

202:51:12 Duke: Pete, looking out of the hatch window towards the back at the Moon, I think this view’s even getting more stunning, and - just brilliant whites and grays against a stark black background - looks like it’s not even real.
202:51:30 Peterson (Mission Control): Roger.
202:51:30 Public Affairs Officer (Mission Control): That was Charlie Duke giving us a visual
description of the Moon from a distance of 7200 nautical miles.
