Lot Essay

While waiting for Irwin to join him at the upslope rim of the Station 6 crater (partly visible in the background) Scott took this photograph to show the lunar surface before digging a trench.

Irwin ran out of film as he took the second photograph showing David Scott’s boot and arm to the left. The Hasselblad B&W magazines contained 180 frames and the color ones 160.

144:36:08 Irwin: I’m probably just about out of film. Why don’t you check with my Mag?
144:36:17 Scott: Okay. Yeah, 180.

The center of the image is partly obscured because of a dust smudge on the lens, giving a ghostly effect to the image.

Scott is putting his tongs into the ground next to the gnomon so that he can photograph the surface where they collect samples. Hadley Canyon and Hill 305 are in the right background.

“It was a natural thing for me to be there... I didn’t feel out of place. It was acceptable... It was spectacular, it was different, but it was accepted. In my mind I accepted that. Okay, we’re on the Moon. That’s terrific. Great. Now, let’s go do some geology,” said David Scott (Chaikin, Voices, p.62).

Irwin climbed toward the Rover near its tracks so that Scott could take this great photograph of both the Rover tracks and bootprints next to each other.

144:39:27 Scott: But look at the Rover tracks; I’m going to take some pictures of the Rover tracks here. And our boot prints, both. Look at the difference. That old Rover is light.
144:39:39 Irwin: It does a lot better than we do!
144:39:40 Scott: Yeah, it sure does. Much better!
144:39:43 Irwin: (Laughing) Ohhh!
144:39:50 Allen (Mission Control): A little something for the soil mechanics (experts). Sounds great...
144:39:51 Irwin: Here, I’ll walk up right alongside the tracks, there, so you...
144:39:53 Scott: (Garbled)
144:39:53 Allen: ...And we’d like for you to put several scoops of the soil in bag number 6 on the Hand Tool Carrier when you get back to the Rover.
144:40:02 Scott: (To Joe) Okay. (To Jim) Go ahead, Jim. (Pause) Yeah, that’s a great picture but don’t fall down.
144:40:10 Irwin: (Laughs) That’d be even a better picture!
