The photograph was taken looking north with the 3-inch focal length from an altitude of 111 km and a Sun elevation of 27°.

The Apollo 17 landing site is at the bottom of image (to the left of center) with the South Massif, the North Massif, Family Mountain, the East Massif, the Sculptured Hills and even the mantle of lighter material extending from the South Massif and the Lincoln Scarp clearly visible.

From bottom top in a straight light above the landing site and on the eastern edge of the Sea of Serenity (visible in the left portion of the image) are the 29-km Littrow Crater, the 61-km Crater Le Monnier and the 95-km Crater Posidonius. The 40-km Crater Römer is at the top right, located in the Taurus Mountains extending in the right portion of the image.
Latitude / longitude: 22.9° N / 31.6° E.

The photograph was taken looking north with the 3-inch focal length from an altitude of 106 km and a Sun elevation of 8°.

The Apennine mountain range is at the terminator at the left of image with Mount Hadley in shadow at the north of the range below the Caucasus mountain range extending at the top center. Many wrinkle ridges appear on the pockmarked mare surface of the western Sea of Serenity (at the right of image) illuminated by the low Sun angle. Sulpicius Gallus Rille is at the bottom left.
