Lot Essay

From left to right, Bennet Hill, Hill 305, Mount Hadley partially in shadow, and the Swann Range illuminated by the Sun (a series of mountains with rounded tops named after Gordon Swann, the Apollo 15 geology team leader), form the skyline in the background of this fabulous panorama. Irwin’s shadow and footprints are in the foreground.

“The view from the slopes of Hadley Delta at station 2 can only be described as spectacular. Off in the distance, Mount Hadley and the hills west of the rille gave the horizon a distinctive personality - missing at the earlier landing sites - and provided visual balance to the winding, sinuous rille which trends north away from the mountain. Because it was still early morning at Hadley, the eastern wall of the rille was in shadow. In contrast, the western wall and, in places, parts of the floor were fully lit. Everywhere in the bottom of the rille, the floor was littered with house-size boulders” (from the ALSJ mission summary).

“Possibly of egal importance with all the findings by Apollo 15 was the discovery_shared through television by millions of people_that there existed beauty and majesty in views of nature that had previously been outside human experience.”
Harrison Schmitt (NASA SP-350, p.279)
