Lot Essay

The East Massif (left), Bear Mountain (center) and the South Massif (5km away, right) dominate the horizon in the background of this panorama taken by Cernan 50 m above the floor of the Valley of Taurus-Littrow.
The 500 m wide Henry Crater is visible behind the Rover.

“I wish I’d climbed to the top of the mountain to get even a better view. But, even where we were it was a much better panorama than we got from the Scarp (station 2A). We couldn’t see much from the Scarp. Over here, we could see everything: Challenger, the Scarp, the Sculptured Hills, and everything. I do remember this. It was fantastic - like coming over a hill and getting a look into a great big valley somewhere in the middle of Idaho,” said Eugene Cernan (from the ALSJ mission transcript at 165:35:20 GET).

“A panorama of lunar history is captured in this view looking south over the Valley of Taurus-Littrow. A huge fragmented boulder had rolled almost a mile down the side of the North Massif to here, Station 6 on our traverse. Our LM and its light area of surface alteration can be seen on the photo about an inch to the right of the top point of the boulder. That’s me at the left. Note the marks of my sampling scoop on the debris resting on a slanting surface of the boulder at left. Gene Cernan took the photos from which this mosaic was assembled” said Harrison Schmitt (NASA SP-350, pp. 284-285).

165:34:53 Cernan: Oh, and there’s Challenger! Holy Smoley! You know, Jack, when we finish with Station 8, we will have covered this whole valley from corner to corner!
165:35:18 Schmitt: That was the idea.
