Lot Essay

Jack took this 12 o’clock LM (relative position to the LM hatch) panorama with Cernan’s Hasselblad camera before they started the EVA-3 traverse.

Cernan is working at the Rover and mounting sample bags on Schmitt’s camera.
On the left of the LM ladder is the Modular Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA) and the remains of the Rover extraction system can be seen on the right.
The North Massif, Wessex Cleft, the Sculptured Hills and the East Massif (left to right) form the skyline in the background.

“You could live on the Moon. Self-sufficient. The Moon could be as much of an outpost for humankind as Plymouth was, at one time. [...] And in so doing, you also can develop a lunar economy that will be self-sufficient, that won’t require subsidy, and indeed can profit from exports to space and exports to Earth. All that’s very realistic now. I’m getting more and more confident that that’s possible. I don’t know who’s going to do it, but it’s possible,” reflected
Harrison Schmitt (Chaikin, Voices, p.192).

163:56:11 Parker (Mission Contol): Jack, are you going out to take the pan now?
163:56:16 Schmitt: Well, as soon as I finish up here, I’ll do that.
163:56:20 Parker: Okay. And after you take the pan, we’d like you to retrieve the cosmic ray experiment. They’re expecting a little solar storm, and before the rain gets on the cosmic ray experiment, they’d like to retrieve it. We’ll leave it in the ETB during the traverse.
163:56:40 Schmitt: Okay, (I’ll do it) after the pan. All right. [...]
163:57:02 Cernan: Jack, I’ll just go ahead and mount some of these bags on your camera while I’m here.

“Okay. And after you take the pan, we’d like you to retrieve the cosmic ray experiment.”
Bob Parker (Mission Control)
