Lot Essay

424 a
A frame of the 4 O’clock LM Pan taken by Bean at the end of the first EVA. The American flag decal is clearly visible on Intrepid.

“Conrad is working at the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA) of the Lunar Module, trying to get the rock box latched on the MESA table. The color/shadow chart is hanging at the edge of the MESA. The S-Band antenna is at the right side of the picture. The carrier for the Apollo Lunar Hand Tools (ALHT) is near Conrad” (ALSJ caption for AS12-47-6988).

424 b
A frame of the 4 O’clock LM Pan (so called because it is facing the 4 o’clock side of the LM) taken by Bean at the end of the first EVA. The dish antenna was used for communicating with Earth. The Hand Tool Carrier (HTC) is in the foreground.

118:31:53 Bean: Okay, one more set (of pictures) to go.
118:31:56 Conrad: Okay.
118:31:59 Bean: I’ve got this bag of rocks on me, here. Want me to bring them to you in a minute?
118:32:03 Conrad: Well, I’m having trouble over here with the rock-box holders.
118:32:09 Bean: Okay. If you have a little trouble, I can help you with it.
118:32:13 Conrad: Yeah. This rock box keeps wanting to go up in the air. (Pause) Nope. The heck with it. I ain’t got time to mess with it. (Pause, taking the scale out of the rock box) One scale. (Long Pause)
118:32:48 Conrad: Got to get this core tube, buddy.
118:32:50 Bean: I know it. (Pause) As fast as I can. (Pause)
118:33:10 Bean: Okay, all the pans are done, Pete. Okay?

424 c
Pete Conrad took the first panorama showing his shadow in the lunar landscape at the lunar-science station (or ALSEP site) during EVA 1.

The second panorama was taken from Pete Conrad’s window of the LM after EVA-1 towards Bench and Head craters with the shadow of the LM Intrepid in the foreground.

The third panorama was taken from Alan Bean’s window of the LM after EVA 1 with the American flag and the S-band antenna in the foreground. The lunar-science station and the Solar Wind Experiment site are visible in the distance.

424 d
A frame of the panoramic sequence taken by Bean from his LMP right hand window of the LM before changing film for the next EVA when the astronauts would use only B&W film. The view shows the lunar horizon to the left of the lunar-science station and the shadow of the S-band antenna.
