Pete Conrad with the reflection of the LM in his visor; triptych of Alan Bean unpacking scientific equipment; Bean at the LM, November 14-24, 1969, EVA 1
415 a Charles Conrad is using a lanyard to pull the first of the scientific experiment packages out of the LM Bay on a rail. His Hasselblad camera is mounted on his chest.
NASA released a variant of this photograph ( NASA AS12-47-6913).
116:33:36 Bean: (Wanting to take a picture) Look at me, Pete. (Pause) It’s a good shot, babe. The LM and everything’s reflecting in your visor.
415 b The astronauts had to remove the Apollo Lunar Scientific Equipment Package (ALSEP) from the stowage areas on the descent stage of the LM. It was in two sub-packages that were folded up or collapsed for more compact storage.
The first and third photograph show Alan Bean as he pulled out the RTG package (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator, which is the power source for the ALSEP) from the SEQ (scientific Equipment) Bay of the LM. He is wearing a “saddlebag” at his left hip. The pulleys that were operated with the tapes are visible. The second photograph shows the first package of the ALSEP (Apollo lunar Surface Experiment Package), which Conrad previously removed from the SEQ Bay. The shadow of the photographer Pete Conrad is visible in all three photographs.
116:33:53 Bean: Lay her on the ground. Okay, I’ll get mine (meaning the first ALSEP package) out. (Long Pause) Right out on the boom, just like advertised. 116:34:13 Conrad: Wait until I get this out of your way. 116:34:14 Bean: Okay.
415 c “Bean is using a lanyard to rotate the cask that holds the plutonium fuel element used to power the RTG (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator), the power source for the ALSEP, down into a horizontal position so that he can use a special tool to remove the dome top and extract the fuel element” (ALSJ caption for AS12-46-6786).
116:40:44 Bean: Fuel cask comes down beautifully. In position. Came down just right.
