Lot Essay

A great photograph showing a man on the lunar surface with his Home Planet in the background.

Schmitt had to hold the camera in his hand and get it as low to the ground as he could without kneeling to take the photograph. He can be seen in the reflection of Cernan’s gold-plated visor. The South Massif is in the background.

“This photo, I believe, captures it all_mankind, the Moon, the Earth, the blackness and endlessness of time and space, and perhaps of greatest importance, the flag of our nation. The legacy of Apollo is not the technology you now hold in the palm of your hand, but rather the dedication and commitment of those millions of Americans who, in troubled times, made it all possible,” noted Eugene Cernan (Jacobs, p.118).

118:26:38 Schmitt: Let me get over here closer to you.
118:26:43 Schmitt: Okay. That might have got it (the Earth).
