Lot Essay

556 a
This vertical panorama was taken near Crater Prinz through the 250mm telephoto lens from an altitude of 102km and shows great detail of the lunar surface. The 4-km Crater Krieger C is visible in the center, rille Aristarchus III is at the top and rille Prinz I at the bottom of image. Latitude / longitude: 28 N 44.5 W.

The spacecraft was at an altitude of about 120 km during revolutions 62 to 69 when these splendid photographs of magazine 81/QQ were taken with the 500mm lens and the transparent glass reseau plate engraved with grid markings of the lunar surface Hasselblad telephoto camera (Apollo 15 was the only crew with Apollo 17 to bring back cameras from the surface).

These photographs show an impact crater west of Crater La Perouse between Smyth’s Sea and the Sea of Tranquillity (orbit 62, latitude / longitude: 9.5 S 74.5 E ; a bright area near Sulpicius Gallus in the southwestern Sea of Serenity (orbit 63, 21.0 N 9.0 E); Feuillee and Beer craters (each 10 km in diameter) in the eastern Sea of Rains (orbit 63, 27.0 N 9.0 W; and the 11-km Crater Messier (orbit 69, 1.5 S 48.0 E) in the Sea of Fertility superbly captured with its elliptical form, believed to have been carved out by a very oblique impact.

556 c
This photograph from magazine 97/O was taken looking north with the 250mm telephoto lens 115km over the 98-km Crater Kondratyuk (in the center) near the lunar farside terminator (latitude / longitude: 15 S 116 E).

“Al Worden saw things differently. He liked the idea of long shadow photographs and took many of those.”
NASA chief of photography Richard Underwood (Schick and Van Haaften, p.112)

556 d
These very rare photographs were taken with a special UV transmitting 105-mm lens on the Hasselblad camera, along with magazine 99/N containing the UV sensitive film.

The first photograph shows the 34-km Crater Langrenus B, the 44-km Crater F and the 29-km Crater Langrenus K to the left of image in the eastern Sea of Fertility (latitude / longitude: 4.7 S 58.4 E); the second shows an area southwest of Rima Bradley in the Apennine Mountains Range (latitude / longitude: 21.6 N 3.3 W).
