Lot Essay

A great photograph of the Command Module station-keeping with the LM over highlands and craters on the west rim of Smyth’s Sea between Craters Gilbert and Schubert.

098:25:31 Stafford (Snoopy): Yes, now we’re getting in pretty good shape, babe. You really make a beautiful background against the Moon down there, John.
098:25:41 Cernan (Snoopy): I’ll tell you, John, these pictures of you against that Moon ought to be fantastic.

266 b
Young took the photograph through the 80mm lens looking north over highlands located between the Sea of Crises (top right) and the Sea of Fertility (bottom) with the 80mm lens.
Latitude / Longitude: 6° N / 50° E.

During their approach descent to the lunar surface on board the LM Snoopy, Cernan and Young could only use the Hasselblad loaded with B&W film because of a failure with the color magazine soon after undocking from the CM Charlie Brown, which made them particularly angry.

From the mission transcript as the LM was following its westward orbital path past Smyth’s Sea:

098:43:46 Stafford (Snoopy): I can’t get this (the Hasselblad with color film) going. We’re going to have to wind film here.
098:43:51 Cernan (Snoopy): What are you going to do? I’d sure like to get him while he (Charlie Brown) moves away. Where is he?
098:43:55 Stafford (Snoopy): Yes.
098:44:18 Stafford (Snoopy): Boy, that Hasselblad!
098:44:34 Cernan (Snoopy): That thing failed three or four times already. Failed to work. [...]
098:45:03 Stafford (Snoopy): Houston, you can pass on to our Support Division this Hasselblad film pack has failed about three or four times on us. [...]
098:45:30 Cernan (Snoopy): Son of a bitch! That’s inexcusable. Get out here a million miles from nowhere, and the god-dang film packs won’t work. [...]
098:46:14 Stafford (Snoopy): Is this black and white? Try the black and white (magazine). [...]

This near vertical view was taken with the 80mm lens and B&W magazine 29/P as Charlie Brown separated from Snoopy before the LM’s descent to the lunar surface. It shows Charlie Brown above the southern Sea of Tranquillity (with the 22-km Crater Maskelyne cut off at top) in the background.

098:46:43 Cernan (Snoopy): Take him with that (the Hasselblad loaded with B&W film) . It’s not set right. Check the setting, Tom. I didn’t set it. [...]
098:47:18 Young (Charlie Brown): OK. Separation.
098:47:25 Stafford (Snoopy): OK. Can see your thrusters firing there, John, and we’re moving away.
098:47:52 Stafford (Snoopy): OK, José. Say adios and we’ll see you back in about 6 hours.

266 e
This photograph was taken by Young with the 80mm lens looking west (forward) toward the future Apollo 11 landing site which is just out of view in upper right center. The orbiting CM was at an altitude of about 60 nautical miles over the Sea of tranquillity, contrasting with the photographs obtained from low altitude by the LM crew during its descent approach to the landing site.

“The crew gave nicknames (or code names) to most of the prominent features shown in this photograph such as Thud Ridge, The gashes, Faye Ridge, Diamondback Rille, Sidewinder Rille, and Last ridge” (NASA SP-246, p. 76).
