102 a Mexico, Coahuila, Torreon-Saltillo area photographed from space.
“Small cumulus clouds hung like a tiny crown atop the Sierra de la Palma, in the left center, to adorn this photo of the mainland’s eastern mountains. The Sierra de la Palma is a roughly triangular, isolated mass of uplifted Cretaceous rocks at the eastern end of Antefosa de Parras in the Sierra Madre Oriental” (NASA SP-171, p. 220).
121:20:17 Borman: Okay. We’re going over Mexico here now and 121:20 - see if we can take sequence of pictures here just to finish out this magazine. Very interesting terrain.
102 b “There is some absolutely magnificent photography by the Gemini VII team, guys who had to endure 14 days in a machine where their heads wouldn’t ever be more than a foot or so apart.” NASA chief of photography Richard Underwood (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 55)
102 c “Socotra, an island about 75 miles long in the Indian Ocean south of Aden and Muscat and Oman. A British party resurveyed it a few years ago for the first time in more than a century. [...] The tiny islands to the left of Socotra are The Brothers, and the slender one in the Sun’s glitter at the top is ‘Abd Al Kuri” (NASA SP-171, p. 98).
208:42:31 Lovell: Another thing that ... up here. 208:43:54 Borman: Right. 208:43:56 Lovell: Green cannot come through .... brownish color, brownish gray. Green cannot come through .... 208:47:01 Borman: ... Picture 208:47 ... lead with an island and ended up with Apollo Landmark.
102 d “The roughly diagonal line here is Cuba’s north coast. The light-blue area offshore is the Great Bahama Bank, where the sea is only about 30 feet deep. The darker, circular area at the lower right edge is the Tongue of the Ocean, where it is about a mile deep. One can see how submarine erosion has notched the sea floor around this deep area” (NASA SP-171, p. 14).
102 e “Most of Haiti is shown here with cumulus clouds piled over the highlands. The large island in the center is the Ile de la Gonave. East of it, at the right end of a nearly rectangular harbor, is Port au Prince. Near it are two large lakes, between which the common boundary of Haiti and the Dominican Republic runs. The upper peninsula is an extension of the Cordillera Central” (NASA SP-171, p. 17).
102 f A very rare infrared ektachrome photograph showing clouds over Brazil, Ceara, Rio Grande de Norte, Paraiba States, Natal.
“The camera has enabled men to use parts of the spectrum to which their own eyes do not respond, and this increases the information obtainable from afar about conditions on the Earth’s surface. By combining the observations made in different spectral bands, scientists obtain still more information. This enables them to survey and study developments in parts of the Earth that are difficult and sometimes perilous to enter” (Cortright, p. 173).
