A phenomenon when it was launched in the early 1980s, the IWC for Porsche Design Ocean 2000 diver’s watch has the distinction of being the first diver’s wristwatch with a case and bracelet fully made of titanium. It is also water resistant to an incredible 2000 metres, an extremely impressive feat of engineering. At the time the Ocean 2000 was produced, titanium was an absolutely cutting edge innovation in watchmaking. Having approximately half the weight but twice the strength of steel, totally non-corrosive and non-magnetic, titanium had been used as early as 1970 to make an edition of watch cases by Citizen. However, IWC and Porsche Design can be credited with manufacturing the first wristwatch where both the case and bracelet are constructed in full titanium. In 1972, the Porsche Design Company had been launched in order to produce and sell Bauhaus-inspired products, including watches, to the luxury market. This naturally led to collaborations with watch manufacturers, most notably with IWC. The first IWC model to be crafted from titanium was the ‘Titan’ Chronograph reference 3700. Following the Titan Chronograph and with the titanium machining process established, perhaps the greatest IWC-Porsche Design watch - the Ocean 2000 was launched. Designed in 1980 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, due to its water resistance and non-magnetic qualities it was originally intended for use by the German navy, for which three specific military models were produced. The Ocean 2000 features an unusually large for the time 42 mm case with push-in and turn bezel locking mechanism, this large size makes it ideal for today’s collectors. Available to the public between 1983 and 1998, in the early years of production, the Ocean 2000 had only ‘Porsche Design’ on the dial, these pieces were retailed through the company’s own outlets. The model was showcased at the Basel Watch Fair in 1983 and from that point onwards they were additionally signed by IWC. Now highly sought-after, the Ocean 2000 is appreciated for its historic technical importance, style and Porsche DNA.
