Lot Essay

Audemars Piguet produced the Royal Oak reference 15300 between 2005 and 2012 in a variety of metals. Notably, it was the first Royal Oak model to feature AP's in-house Cal. 3120, a self-winding movement that replaced the Cal. 2121, an ultra-thin movement that was based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre movement. This was a modern, better constructed movement with Gyromax balance supported by a balance bridge as opposed to a balance cock of the Cal. 2121.

The Ref. 15300 had the same case size as the original Royal Oak Ref. 5402 at 39 mm., but there were subtle differences in the dial. The presence of a large applied AP logo at 12 o’ clock was a clear visual distinction. Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak 15400 series in 2012 to replace the ref. 15300 generation. The Ref. 15300 is a significant reference in the history of the Royal Oak and is considered by many as one of the finest – considering it is a good marriage of the traditional and the modern.
