Lot Essay

Made soon after the acquisition of Daniel Roth by Bulgari in 2000, this Datomax bears his signature ‘Double-Ellipse’ or ‘Tonneau’ case. The dial of this watch is in many ways in the classic style; Roman numerals, guilloche dial and blued hands.

Yet Roth elevates this watch to something which appears far more modern; of course, helped by the case shape, but also the way in which the date window interrupts the hour dial and how the second sub-dial covers the ‘V’, ‘VI’ and ‘VII’ hour markers.

What makes this watch even more special is the Omani Crown Khanjar engraving on the sapphire caseback. Presented in very fine condition, this example appears to be the only that has ever surfaced with this special configuration. Presumably this watch was given as a State gift to the original recipient.
