Lot Essay

Highly attrictive and unusual, the present Gyrowinder is inspired by the training machines used by aspiring astronauts at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Gyrowinder is programmed in such a way that it has running and idle periods. With the right adjustment and depending on the weight of the watch, this instrument can generate between 1,000 and 2,000 winding rotations in a 24-hour period. The last retail price known is $16,000.

The Döttling Gyrowinder is no ordinary watch winder. Unlike a conventional winder wherein a watch will rotate on a fixed axis, the Gyrowinder – thanks to its gyroscopic winding system - allows for the free rotation of the watch in all directions including a complete rollover which comes closest to the movement of the watch on the wrist. It also comes with a series of counterweights that can be optionally used in order to keep the face of the watch pointed in a particular direction. A built-in spirit lamp and adjustable feet help position the winder correctly on the desk.
