Lot Essay

While the original IWC Ingenieur in 1950’s was an anti-magnetic tool watch built for use by scientists and engineers (hence the name, Ingenieur is the French world for engineer), the brand’s relationship with Mercedes Benz’s Formula One team meant the Ingenieur for the modern age was always going to be more of a sports watch.

The present titanium-cased wristwatch is a split-seconds chronograph. The pusher at 10 o’ clock can be used to activate the rattrapante hand and measure two separate events simultaneously. When the pusher is activated again, the split-seconds hand instantaneously catches up and is synchronized with the stopwatch hand.

The beating heart of this watch, Cal. 79420, is based on an ETA 7750 movement, and was developed for IWC by Richard Habring (the founder of Austrian indie brand Habring) during his time at the Schaffhausen brand.
