Lot Essay

Master craftsman Jochen Benzinger founded his eponymous watch atelier in Pforzheim, Germany’s traditional jewellery and watchmaking centre, and has made a name for himself as a master of traditional decorative techniques.

Besides designing timepieces for brands like Chronoswiss, IWC, and Glashütte Original, Benzinger creates wristwatches that feature traditional hand-engraving, skeletonization techniques, and engine-turned decorations.

The present watch’s dial features two important traditional decorative techniques – skeletonization, wherein parts of the movement are removed using a goldsmith’s saw to reveal its inner workings. The second decorative technique is the guilloche pattern achieve by the engine-turning process. Geometric patterns are cut into the metal (of the dial) using a hand-guided tool.
