Launched in 2012, the Horological Machine 5 is uniquely both retro and futuristic at the same time. This automatic driver’s timepiece was conceived as a direct homage to two icons of the 1970s – the high-performance supercar and the cult classic Amida Digitrend watch. Available in three different case versions: Zirconium and Steel; Red gold and Titanium; and Carbon Macrolon, the present red gold and titanium example introduced in 2013 was made in a limited edition of 66 pieces.

Whilst the vibe may be 1970s, the exceptional mechanics of the three-dimensional ‘engine’ are absolutely state of the art. Developed by Jean-François Mojon and Vincent Boucard of Chronode, the self-winding movement with 42-hour power reserve has a GP/Sowind gear train and 30 jewels. The time display consists of bi-directional jumping hours and trailing minutes – with indications inversed, reflected at 90° and magnified by 20 percent thanks to an optical grade prism with magnifying lens.

The wedge-shaped bicolour HM5 case is in fact two cases in one, the outer shell has opening louvres inspired by sports cars of the 70s and 80s which are controlled by a slide button on the case to allow light to enter to charge the luminous numerals. Should any moisture enter, two outlets or “exhaust pipes” at the rear drain water out of the case. The inner water resistant case completely protects the high-performance ‘engine’ inside.

Now one of MB&F’s most recognisable wristwatches and highly sought after, the HM5 is a must for the collector or enthusiast of independent watchmaking.
