Lot Essay

The present timepiece is part of a series of watches made by Omega between 1946 and 1956. All of them featured enamel dials featuring either mythical creates, landscapes or floral motifs like the present one. Preserved in very good condition, this a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire an attractive example of a vintage cloisonné enamel dial wristwatch.

Cloisonné enameling is an ancient technique goes way back to the BCE era. An artisan creates compartments or intricate patterns by hand-folding gold wire no larger than human hair. Pliers are used to tease out various shapes on the base plate, a job that calls for amazing finger dexterity. Wristwatches fitted with cloisonné enamel dials take a most prominent position in terms of beauty, craftsmanship, and rarity. Produced mostly in the 1940s and 50s, few watches have survived over the years because of the delicate nature of enamel dials.
