Lot Essay

Patek Philippe reference 1463, known to collectors as the “Tasti Tondi” (round buttons), was first introduced to the market in 1940 and distinguished itself from previous chronographs from the brand in several meaningful ways. Chronographs by Patek Philippe prior to the introduction of reference 1463 were made with snap-on casebacks and square pushers, whereas reference 1463 was made with a screw down caseback and round pushers.

These changes were significant in that they meant the 1463 was water resistant, a detail that would not be lost on clients who were active and wanted a watch that would serve them well in all aspects of their lives. Manufactured mostly in 18k yellow gold, such as the present lot, the timepiece is sporty, elegant, and highly collectible.

The present lot was manufactured in 1953 and sold on June 11th, 1956. The watch features raised hour markers and a tachymeter scale on the perimeter of the dial. A wonderful detail of reference 1463 are the engraved, sporty-chic pushers that provide an additional amount of elegance to the timepiece. A notable characteristic of the present lot are the hallmark engravings which remain crisp and well-defined, an extremely rare characteristic not seen very often in vintage watches. The present lot includes its extract from the archives, presentation box, 18k yellow gold tang buckle, and is a must-have timepiece to experience and enjoy.
