PATEK PHILIPPE, REF. 425 ‘TEGOLINO’, A RARE PLATINUM RECTANGULAR MANUAL-WINDING WRISTWATCH
Patek Philippe produced the Ref. 425 from 1934 and it remained in production until 1960 when it was replaced by the slightly larger reference 2461.
Together with the legendary Calatrava reference 96 it was one of Patek Philippe's most popular wristwatches, its typical Art Deco architectural design serving as inspiration for the firm's other rectangular models of the time. The watch was nicknamed ‘Tegolino’ by Italian collectors because its rectangular shape resembled a popular sponge cake known as the Tegolino.
It is fitted with the celebrated rectangular-shaped calibre 9-90, Patek Philippe’s finest non-circular movement of the period. The balance cock of this particular timepiece’s movement is stamped with the letters PXP, which implies that the watch was destined for the US market in the pre-Henri Stern era. Stern became the became agents for Patek in the US in 1937 and post this the balance cocks were stamped HOX when they were sent to the US.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
OVERALL CONDITION: Good, considering its age CASE: Shows signs of wear. The watch has many surface scratches. The platinum case has been polished before but the hallmarks are still visible on the caseband towards the lug. There are some dents on the caseband, which is as well bended in places. DIAL: The dial has been restored professionally. There is some discolouration at the centre of the dial and at seconds sub-dial at 6 o’ clock. MOVEMENT: Ticking at the time of cataloguing. However, we do not test the movement for accuracy. A service is recommended. STRAP/ BUCKLE: Associated pin buckle and strap in fair condition
