Lot Essay

The present watch is a rare example of the celebrated first series "Dato Compax" reference 4767 which was made by Rolex from 1947 for four years. It remains the most complicated wristwatch made by Rolex in series.

The first Dato Compax reference 4767 such as the present watch, was introduced into the market in 1947. Made in a small series only, the model was available in yellow and pink gold as well as in stainless steel and with various dial layouts. Experts believe that about 200 pieces were made in stainless steel and only 30 have been identified in the market this far.

The present watch’s dial carries the verbiage “Oyster Chronographe” and “Anti-Magnetique” which suggests that the watch was destined for the French market. However the day and month wheels are in English suggesting that the calendar indications were changed later. It has what is referred to in the collector’s circle as a Mark 1 Roman numerals dial.

Rolex's celebrated Oyster triple calendar chronograph or "Dato-Compax" wristwatch was available in four different series: Reference 4767 was replaced by reference 5036, followed by references 6036 and 6236.

For a discussion and illustration of such dial on a "Dato Compax" reference 6036 model see I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, p. 406 & 407.

Different versions of reference 4767 in regard to case material and dial layout are illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 372 - 375.
