Lot Essay

Reference 6036, the third generation of the celebrated “Dato Compax” Oyster triple calendar chronograph model presented by Rolex, was available with various dial layouts, cased mainly in yellow gold and in stainless steel. It was introduced in 1950 and was produced till 1958 before being replaced by the Ref. 6236.
The bezel and the main case was carved out of one block of metal in what is referred to as a monobloc construction. It is learnt that only 500 pieces were made in stainless steel of the Ref. 6036. Only 75 pieces have been identified in the market since and to find one in such good condition as the present lot is indeed a rare occurence. The present lot, with its lovely white textured dial, has earned the nickname “Snow Compax”.
There were many dial variants on the Ref. 6036 depending on the market and the year, this present example has a Mk 3 dial with gilt pyramidal hour markers.
The highly collectible Dato Compax is forever associated with famed French Olympic skiing legend and Rolex enthusiast Jean-Claude Killy who often sported a Dato Compax. The model hence has been dubbed by watch enthusiasts the “Jean-Claude Killy”.
