Lot Essay

The present reference 5513 is a very well-preserved example of a 1966 Submariner model with a beautifully black matte “meters first” dial. In 1966 Rolex replaced the glossy dials found on Submariners with matte versions and on the dial, the depth rating was first stated in meters rather than in feet – collectors would eventually refer to these dials as “Meters First”. The earliest versions of this dial were fitted in watches bearing serial numbers ranging from 1’4xx’xxx until 2’5xx’xxx (1’515’158 for the present one).
The well-preserved, slightly creamy luminous accents are intact and in a shade perfectly matching the luminescence of the hands. Furthermore, the case shows strong proportions and well-defined edges to the lugs.
Aside from the aesthetic appeal, the timepiece feature the sought-after “inverted case numbers”. Rolex watches normally display the serial numbers between the lugs at 6 o’clock and the reference number between the lugs at 12 o’clock. On the present watch, these locations are reversed.
The Ref. 5513 was in production from 1962 until 1989, one of the longest manufacturing runs of any Rolex ever made. During the 27 years of production the model has encountered a multitude of variations of dials, all illustrating the incessant quest for innovations by the firm, while staying true to its heritage.
