Lot Essay

Although they are best known for their unusually complex women’s watches, Van Clef & Arpels have every now and then produced timepieces aimed at men. In 2004, they introduced a trio of men’s watches in the Monsieur Arpels line, inspired by Ref. PA 49, a wristwatch it made in 1949.

The arc-form calendar display on the caseback shows months, days, and date from 2004 to 2092 – which makes it valid for 88 years. The calendar can be custom-engraved to start at any date the user desires. Thus, the watch is meant to an “inter-generational calendar” designed to be worn by different generations of users.
