Lot Essay

The present white gold Saxonia Thin, with its scintillating Lange ‘Gold Flux’ glass dial, is a particularly captivating interpretation of A. Lange & Söhne’s purest time-only wristwatch.

Focused on the essential functions of hours and minutes, the watch is distinguished by an extraordinary dial whose silver base is covered by a layer of ‘Gold Flux’ glass. Drawing upon a technique mastered by Murano glassmakers, copper oxide is added to molten glass and crystallises as the material cools, creating countless shimmering particles within the surface. The result is a subtle yet mesmerising sparkle that constantly changes according to the light. Twelve applied solid gold hour markers complete the beautifully restrained composition.

Housed in an elegant 39 mm. white gold case, the watch retains the exceptionally slim proportions characteristic of the Saxonia Thin collection. Through the sapphire crystal caseback, the manually wound movement reveals the exceptional level of traditional finishing synonymous with A. Lange & Söhne, including beautifully executed hand-finished bevels and the characteristic three-quarter plate. Despite the apparent simplicity of the watch, the movement incorporates a traditional free-sprung balance with regulating screws, further demonstrating the uncompromising mechanical refinement concealed beneath the minimalist exterior.
