Lot Essay

Released in 2019, Reference 15500 is one of the latest iterations of the iconic Royal Oak model, replacing Reference 15400. Featuring an elegant 41 mm case, it houses the new in-house caliber 4302. Compared to its predecessor, the new caliber notably offers a longer power reserve: while the caliber 3120 provided 60 hours, this version offers 70 hours.

Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak is a phenomenon, one of the most recognizable and successful wristwatch models of all time, and the first luxury steel sports watch. The concept of a luxury sports watch was entirely new when the Royal Oak was introduced in 1972. It was designed by none other than Gérald Genta, the man behind many of the most enduring wristwatch designs of the last 50 years. The watch, featuring an octagonal screwed bezel initially inspired by an antique diver’s helmet, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic wristwatch designs of the 20th century.
