Lot Essay

Chronographs such as the present example are cherished by collectors due to their rarified nature. Enhancing its appeal, the dial of the timepiece has aged throughout the years from black to a highly attractive brown shade, a process now referred to amongst collectors as ‘Tropicalization’. With a very well preserved stainless steel case, with clearly defined proportions and edges, the present wristwatch is a highly attractive and rare example of the reference.

The Royal Oak collection was introduced in 1972, redefining the identity of a sports watch. With groundbreaking designs, the Royal Oak secured a discerning and informed audience and became throughout the years the emblem of the Audemars Piguet manufacture as well as a true icon within the watch community.

With a well-balanced design inspired by porthole’s of vessels, the wristwatch became an unquestionable icon of the 20th century and is still one of the most coveted timepieces to date.
