According to the Breguet Archives, this desk clock was made in 1953 and sold on 5 March 1954 to M. Guggenheim.
The purchaser of this beautiful and highly attractive timepiece was almost certainly a member of the famous and fabulously wealthy Guggenheim family who made their fortune in the mining and refining businesses.
Founded in 1847 by Meyer Guggenheim, the family became noted for their philanthropy in fields as diverse as modern art and aviation. Several museums bear the Guggenheim name including perhaps the most famous, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, founded by Marguerite ‘Peggy’ Guggenheim (1898-1979).
The present clock is unusual in being constructed with a solid silver case which is overlaid with pink gold sheet, not merely gold-plated, but a separate layer of gold is expertly laminated to the silver base.
Exuding fine craftsmanship and luxury, it impresses with its clean-lined simplicity, truly an exquisite trophy from the House of Breguet.
