Lot Essay

The Papillon, a ground-breaking design that combined traditional haute horlogerie with cutting-edge mechanical artistry, was unveiled by Daniel Roth in 2005, not long after the house was acquired by Bvlgari.

Three variations were produced, all distinguished by different case metals and dial colours: 80 platinum pieces with a blue steel dial (ref. 318.Y.70), 210 white gold pieces with a silvered dial, such as the present timepiece, and 210 pink gold pieces with a rhodium-black dial (ref. 318.Y.50).

The watch's name, Papillon, which translates to 'butterfly' in French, is a poetic allusion to its innovative time-display mechanism and is inspired by butterfly wings. Two blued lozenge-shaped minute hands are set above a revolving disc in the center. Each hand moves along the minute track as time goes on. When one reaches the 60-minute index, it turns on its axis and vanishes beneath the dial, revealing its twin at the 0-minute mark.
