Lot Essay

Combining haute horology with traditional artisan techniques, the outstanding feature of this superb and unique Astronomia Art Dragon static gravitational double-axis tourbillon watch is the black plated 24 carat gold figure of a mythical dragon, with ruby-set eyes it inhabits and guards the globe, Jacob-cut diamond and the tourbillon itself. The minutely detailed hand-engraved figure is extraordinary in the level of its finish which creates shadows and highlights that give the dragon an incredible 3-Dimensional effect to the point that it seems to be almost alive. For the Astronomia Art Dragon, the tourbillon is double-axis, therefore turning simultaneously on two axes: one with a rotation of 60 seconds and the other making one rotation every 2.5 minutes.

This spectacular unique horological work of art, accompanied by the special Jacob & Co. ‘Dragon’ fitted box and full set of accessories, offers international collectors and those who appreciate the very best craftsmanship a singular opportunity to obtain one of the undoubted contemporary masterpieces of Jacob & Co.

The incredible domed sapphire crystal and white gold case acts as a gallery for the remarkable sculptural work of art and Astronomia tourbillon movement. The base of the dial is paved with 202 baguette white diamonds totalling 8.37 carats. Additionally, the lugs are covered with 80 invisibly set baguette white diamonds totalling around 6.10 carats. Completing this unique tourbillon watch is the 18k white gold folding buckle set with 18 baguette white diamonds weighing 1.4 carats.

Each of the four arms of the JCAM25 caliber titanium movement has a unique complication exclusive to Jacob & Co.: a magnesium and hand-lacquered globe of the earth, a dual-axis tourbillon, a dial for the hours and minutes with a patented timepiece-differential gear system and a one-carat spherical-shaped diamond with 288 facets known as the ‘Jacob-Cut’ that rotates on itself once every 30 seconds. This diamond, which is located on one of the four satellites must be cut not only to the special spherical shape but must also weigh exactly the same as each of the other three satellites. To achieve this amazing triumph of diamond cutting takes a skilled craftsman at least two weeks of dedicated, painstaking work. The globe of the earth is made of magnesium coated with hand-painted black lacquer and completed with white gold continents that makes one rotation every 60 seconds.

The mythical dragon represents strength and power, glory and good fortune. The sculptural dragon in this watch was designed using CAD (Computer-aided-design) in order to ensure its perfect placement within the case. Once the 24-carat gold cast is produced, a highly skilled artisan hand-sculpts the exquisitely fine details of the dragon so that every surface is chased, engraved and polished, a process that takes more than five months in total.
