Lot Essay

The present clock was created as a limited edition of 3000 pieces to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Jaeger-LeCoultre, a milestone celebration of one of the most innovative manufactures in horological history. Two commemorative plaques are set into the gilt brass base of this special edition, one of which is engraved with the clock's unique number and the other of which displays the number '150' in a laurel wreath.

Jean-Léon Reutter created the first prototype of the Atmos clock in 1928, and since 1935, Jaeger-LeCoultre has been manufacturing and improving it. The Atmos is powered by a hermetically sealed capsule that contains a unique gas mixture that expands and contracts with even the smallest changes in temperature or atmospheric pressure. This concept is based on the ground-breaking idea of perpetual motion. The clock doesn't need to be manually wound because these small variations are sufficient to wind the mainspring and keep it running perpetually.
