Lot Essay

When Konstantin Chaykin's The Joker first came out in 2017, it immediately became a sensation. Originally intended as a limited edition of 99 pieces, the model's inventive yet whimsical design captivated collectors all over the world, leading to a follow-up titanium edition of 88 pieces.

The present model is especially striking, with a black DLC-coated case that enhances the watch's provocative allure. The tongue, placed in the mouth, functions as the moon-phase indicator, a whimsical and unusual method of reading time that has since become a symbol of independent watchmaking. The rolling eyes, like those of all Joker models, show the hours and minutes. The Joker's unique personality and visual depth are attributed to the purple dial, which is embellished with wavy guilloché patterns that radiate outward from the nose.

What makes this particular piece stand out is its Super-Luminova detailing, which illuminates the lips and the tiny rings around the pupils in the dark, producing an incredibly expressive 'glow' that makes the Joker's subtle smile come to life. Powering the watch is a ETA 2824 automatic movement, combined with an in-house model developed by Chaykin to provide the unusual time and moon-phase display.
