This 18K gold version of the ‘Hommage à Nicholas Copernicus’ fountain pen was made in a limited edition of 888 pieces in 2003, the present example being no. 618.
The reeded body is encircled by nine white gold bands, each set with a yellow diamond to represent the planets' orbit around the sun. The 18K gold nib is engraved with Copernicus' orbital charts.
Nicholas (Nicolaus) Copernicus (1473-1543), was a mathematician and astronomer, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the centre of the universe. The publication of Copernicus' model in his book De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1543, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution. Contributions to the “revolution” continued until finally ending with Isaac Newton’s work over a century later.
Montblanc Established in 1906 in Germany, Montblanc rapidly rose to international prominence as a manufacturer of writing instruments. Its Meisterstück, launched in 1924, would become the world's most celebrated pen.
The successful introduction of the 1924 Skeleton pen in 1999 marked the beginning of the artisan group at Montblanc, which is dedicated to the development and production of the most valuable limited editions with the strictest limitations.
