Lot Essay

The celebrated Cosmic was introduced into the market in 1947. It was Omega's first watch featuring a full calendar combined with phases of the moon and at the time one of the smallest full calendar wristwatches. It was mainly available with 14K or 18K yellow or pink gold cases and with a variety of dial colours and designs.

The present Cosmic is a very attractive and well-preserved example of the ref. 2471/1, launched in 1949, fitted with a stainless steel case and powered by the manual-wound cal. 381.

It stands out by its untouched two-tone silvered dial with a “tropical” moon phase disc, which over time has changed from dark blue to a chocolate brown tone. The blue colour of the outer date indication perfectly matches the blue of the central date hand. The steel case is likeweise well preserved, still retaining the original crown with the Omega symbol.

Examples of ref. 2627 are described and illustrated in Omega – A Journey through Time by Marco Richon, p. 277, pl. 2868 & 2758.
