Lot Essay

Crafted in pink gold, this timepiece is uniquely equipped with a rare prototype dial. Such dials are scarcely seen on the market, particularly on complicated watches. It is believed that these dials belonged to a watchmaker at Patek Philippe, working from the 1980s to the 2000s, who was instrumental in developing complicated movements, including the iconic 5110.
Initially, Patek Philippe aimed to outfit the 5110 with a sleek, smooth dial, as exemplified by this piece. However, they soon discovered that this delicate surface lacked durability, unable to withstand regular use and the demands of the watch’s intricate mechanisms. Consequently, this smooth dial concept never progressed beyond the prototype stage, and the guilloché version became the only known production model.
The smooth, white prototype dial introduces a fresh aesthetic, imparting a sportier, more dynamic, and contemporary character to the timepiece. Adding to its allure, the watch exhibits a delicate contrast between the white central section and the subtly cream-toned city disc.
