Lot Essay

Perhaps one of the rarest time-only stainless steel rectangular watches, the reference 521 is an absolute marvel of Art Deco design, with its stepped sides, and dial with applied steel deco style numerals.

First launched in 1937 the presently offered watch represents an example from this first year of production. The reference belongs to the same family as the similar references 519, 520, and 522.

This ref. 521 is the only example of a ref. 521 in stainless steel believed to have surfaced on the auction market to date. Its case was made by Wenger, one of the best Geneva case makers of the period.

For an example of the similar reference 522 see: Patek Philippe Steel Watches, John Goldberger, p. 162-163.
