Lot Essay

According to the Extract from the Archives, the movement of the present timepiece was sold without a case. Both the dial and movement are fitted in a French-manufactured case, as confirmed by the Eagle hallmark on the inside caseback.

This practice gained popularity in the years after World War II as a result of post-war economic policies. The importation of foreign jewelry, including gold watch cases, was forbidden by French import laws. Because of this, a lot of Swiss watchmakers, like Patek Philippe, decided to only export their dials and movements to France, where local casemakers would create cases that were closely modeled after the brand's own Swiss designs.
