Lot Essay

The case of this timepiece is stamped with the trademark of Philippe DuBois & Fils of Le Locle. It combines a high quality minute repeating movement, chronograph and triple calendar, cased in 14K gold it was possibly destined for the Russian market.

It is furthermore fitted with the centrifugal force regulator for the repeating mechanism as the example patented by Charles Barbezat-Baillot in 1889, Swiss patent 334, for improvements to the construction of the mechanisms of repetition for pocket watches of all sizes. The invention won several awards, notably at the Swiss National Exhibition in Geneva in 1896 and the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900.

Philippe DuBois & Fils
One of Switzerland’s oldest watch manufacturers dates back to 1743 when Moïse DuBois started to trade in pocket watches. In 1751 he opened his own manufacture in Le Locle, Switzerland, together with his son Philippe. His two other sons entered the family business as well which consequently was renamed to Philippe DuBois & Fils in 1785. In the years to come, the firm continuously grew and became a renowned manufacturer of high quality watches, appreciated also by royalty, notably the King of Prussia.
