Lot Essay

This example of the highly coveted ref. 1680 stands out by its very well preserved MK IV dial with red Submariner script. Nicknamed “Red Sub” by Rolex collectors, the timepiece features evenly aged luminous accents, the full case has never been subject to careless polishing.

During a servicing presumably at Rolex Watch Australia Pty Ltd. in 2001, bezel, hands, crown and bracelet have been replaced.

The appeal of this “Single Red Sub” is further enhanced by the presence of the period accessories, particularly the original punched guarantees as well as the square green tag announcing the introduction of the Triplock crown as "3 dots on winding crown” and the original under water anchor, all rarities by themselves.

Introduced in the late 1960s, the reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date indicator as well as the cyclops magnifier. Distinguished by its red Submariner printing to the dial, the “Red Sub” as it is known to collectors has become a cult classic.
