Lot Essay

The "Berlin 1907" split-seconds chronograph skillfully blends sophisticated horology with elegant design. Its mother-of-pearl subsidiary registers accentuate its eye-catching dial, which focuses especially on the useful 24-hour indication that lets the wearer tell day from night. In addition to providing 30-minute and 12-hour counters for longer-duration events, the split-seconds chronograph mechanism allows the timing of two events at once.

A medal honoring Berlin, where Ulysse Nardin won a prize for excellence in precision chronometry at the Universal Exposition in 1907, is embossed on the caseback.

The "Berlin 1907" split-second chronograph was made in two different versions. The first, Chronosplit Berlin I, did not have a 24-hour display and instead had a small hour-and-minute subdial at three o'clock. To improve legibility and functionality, the second, Chronosplit Berlin II, such as the current example, was updated with central hour and minute hands and a 24-hour indication at three o'clock.
