Lot Essay

The Ulysse Nardin Executive Tourbillon Free Wheel is a striking demonstration of the manufacture’s expertise in both tourbillon construction and silicium technology. Combining a seven-day manually wound movement with an unconventional three-dimensional architecture, the watch appears to liberate its mechanical components from the traditional confines of the movement, creating the impression that they are floating independently above the dial.

This spectacular effect is enhanced by the large box-shaped sapphire crystal, beneath which the barrel, power-reserve indicator and tourbillon rise prominently from the dial surface. The two gold versions are distinguished by their contrasting dial materials: the white gold model features a distinctive honeycomb-patterned dial, while the pink gold version is fitted with a dial crafted from black slate, providing a dramatic backdrop to the exposed mechanics.

Dominating the composition is the flying tourbillon, itself far from conventional. Within its rotating cage operates Ulysse Nardin’s innovative Anchor Escapement, which exploits the flexibility and exceptionally low friction of silicium components. Flexible silicium blades replace elements found in a traditional escapement, reducing friction while demonstrating the manufacture’s longstanding experimentation with the material.
