Lot Essay

The Vacheron Constantin 222 model was introduced in 1977 to celebrate the 222nd Anniversary of the company. Designed by Jorg Hysek, one of his earliest designs, the 222 is distinctive with its serrated bezel and inset gold Maltese cross symbol.

The square version of the ‘222’ was made in less than 300 examples in total and is very seldom seen on the market, it is thought that of these, fewer than 100 were bicolour steel and gold.

The present watch with the Saudi Arabian crest upon the dial is even rarer, fewer than 12 examples are thought to have been made.

These small and exclusive series of square 222 watches were gifts given by the Royal Family to visiting dignitaries and favoured persons.
