The Breguet Ref. 5447 is a culmination of Abraham Louis Breguet’s contribution to the heritage of horology in a singular timepiece. The present timepiece carries the torch of Abraham Louis Breguet by following the founder’s design style, craftsmanship, and innovation. The Ref. 5447 represents some of the best innovations that Abraham Louis Breguet was able to create during his storied career.
The Gong-Spring
Abraham Louis Breguet would create the first repeating timepiece that replaced the traditional use of a bell in 1738. This would be extremely useful in the advancement of horology as timepieces no longer required a larger Bell to chime, it was reduced into a circular shaped Spring that would chime once the mechanism hammered.
Today, the Gong spring is one of the most important features in the present timepiece. The Ref. 5447 embodies the centuries of heritage and advancement that were made popular by Abraham Louis Breguet. Although A.L. Breguet would create the Gong Spring in steel, the present timepiece has experienced the technical innovations of Breguet in the modern era which includes a gold gong spring to achieve the best sound possible.
Of particular note is the optimized repeating mechanism. The harmony between the two gongs has been enhanced using psycho-acoustic tests and analyses that served to fine-tune clarity, sound resolution and auditory compatibility. The positioning of the gong holders has also been modified so as to achieve the most crystal-clear sound achievable within the case, which serves as a resonance chamber.
Very few examples of this highly complicated platinum watch have appeared at auction, the present watch affords collectors the opportunity to acquire one of the classic trophies of Breguet’s modern production fused with the Founder’s horological genius.
